Advancement in the speciality of Paediatric Dentistry

Document (PDF) AAPD to DBA Core Competencies Paediatric Dentistry Submission

The goal of the specialty of paediatric dentistry is to improve the oral health of infants, children and adolescents, through appropriate preventive, educational and treatment services. As a population-specific specialty, paediatric dentistry encompasses the full range of clinical disciplines, techniques, procedures and skills required of other dental specialties which are then modified and adapted to meet the distinctive requirements of infants, children and adolescents including those with special health care needs. A paediatric dentist is required to lead the dental team in the management of child oral health and consequently the specialty of paediatric dentistry emphasises the integration of knowledge with clinical competency to form a framework of comprehensive oral health care from birth to adulthood. Further, the specialty itself has a responsibility to advocate for child (oral) health by ensuring that individuals and agencies (both public and private) are given the relevant information in order that such specialist paediatric care can be factored in their decision-making processes.
