Treatment in Wheelchairs

For many children in wheelchairs, it is fairly simple to transfer from the wheelchair into the dental chair. For others, the transfer may be more complex or not possible without a hoist. Fortunately, most dental checkups and preventive care can be carried out without needing a child to leave the security of their own wheelchair, particularly if the backrest on your child’s wheelchair can be adjusted or laid back. Please ask your dental professional about wheelchair access and wheelchair-based treatment in their clinic.

If the treatment needs are complex, it may still be necessary to transfer your child into the dental chair. Sometimes it might be gentler to complete complex or extensive dental treatment under general anaesthetic. Our members strongly advocate for your child’s right to have appropriate and timely access to gentle, safe, and effective dental treatment under general anaesthetic when necessary.
